How does Fred save Layla from the Director during this second interview?

The Director grabs Layla by the face and is squeezing her cheeks and twisting her face when Fred comes in and tells him that officials from the High Command have arrived, and would like to meet with him. This causes the Director to order Fred to take Layla back to her cell.
