The protagonist in Inkdeath, by Funke, is Meggie. She is the daughter of Resa and Mortimer. Resa disappeared shortly after Meg was born and has been raised exclusively by her father, Mortimer. They have had to move around a lot during her growing up years. Meg has the same ability that her father has, which is to make the written word come to life simply by reading the words out loud. It is this ability that she uses in Ombra to help her friends and family when they are in trouble. Personality-wise, Meg is independent and opinionated, but at the same time tenderhearted and falls easily for the boys that she meets along her journeys in Ombra.
