Why does Ken Erdedy cut all ties with his drug dealers, only to begin smoking again?

Ken desperately wants to quit smoking marijuana, but at the same time he is not dedicated to the cause. He convinces himself that his problem is not serious. He is functional in life despite his constant addiction, so he reasons with himself to convince himself he can quit at any point.
