What does Mario want to Hal to tell him about sadness?

Mario Incandenza asks his brother, Hal, his opinion about their mother, Avril. Mario wants to know if Avril was happier before or after their father, James, killed himself. Mario thinks that she became happier after he died. Hal tells Mario that their mother was sad after their father died, but she shows it differently.
