Who is Elsa from In the Time of the Butterflies and what is their importance?

Elsa is a friend of Minerva's friends from her time at Inmaculada Concepcion. She is described as a pretty girl, who is shocked by her own beauty. Elsa goes onto marry a journalist but shocks Minerva when she refuses to join the revolution.
