How does Tish compare corridors to the Sahara in Section One of the novel, If Beale Street Could Talk?

Tish says she has come to hate corridors. Both corridors and the Sahara are never empty. She also says that vultures are always present and waiting to eat the dead in both corridors and the Sahara.
