How do Tish and Fonny meet in the novel, If Beale Street Could Talk?

Tish and Fonny grew up across the street from one another, but they never really interacted until they got into a fight. Fonny's friend Daniel and Tish's friend Geneva started fighting and Tish and Fonny got involved. Tish grabbed the first thing she could, which happened to be a piece of wood with a nail in it and hit Fonny. Tish did not really mean to hurt him, but he started to bleed. She was sure that she killed him.
