When Kiguunda and Wangeci briefly decide to capitulate to the demands of the elite, they replace the title-deed on their wall with a board that reads “Christ is the head of this house, the unseen guest at every meal, the silent listener to every conversation” (75). This change symbolizes their decision to conform to the ways of the elite by joining their religion.
