When Kiguunda receives a bank loan the interior of his house transforms, symbolizing his temporary membership among the ranks of the elite. The stage directions indicate that the interior is very different from what it was in previous scenes, noting the presence of “a new dining table with chairs,” “a big suitcase, also new,” and “new plates, cups, basins and so on” (91). The author also highlights the fact that a board with the inscription “Christ is the head…etc.” just like the one in Kioi’s house has replaced the title-deed (91).
