Does Maya get along with her stepfather?

In Chapter 29, Maya is building a relationship with her mother's husband. Daddy Clidell is an uneducated man who has managed to become highly successful in real estate. He teaches Maya to play cards, and Maya finds she even looks like him. She is introduced to many representatives of the Black underground through Clidell, and they teach her not to become the mark, or victim, of anyone's scam by telling her stories of their own escapades. Maya finds herself proud of these con men, as they use their intelligence to overcome the rejection that comes naturally to them.
