Why does paragraph 8 mark a turning point in the story ?

In paragraph eight of the first chapter, the boy is forced to make a near impossible leap. He is being pursued, and his only chance for survival is to successfully jump over the ravine to safety. He takes the chance..... and on the other side he finds his chance to survive. So the journey begins.
