What does the use of the cross play in the effectiveness against the vampires? I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

Matheson specifically refers to the fact the the cross only works on Christian vampires, for whom the cross is a symbol of damnation. He also says that the Star of David has the same effect on Jewish vampires.
