He writes and posts a letter to Carlo, apologizing for his rejection and asking him to thank his parents for placing the ad in the paper. I think the letter speaks to David's incredible empathy, especially for his young age. He also is emotionally intelligent and self-aware enough to understand his own motives as well as how Carlo and his family felt.
