I agree, the more words we know , the better our understanding. Trying to understand a meaning based on context clues is an excellent way to understand words we do not know. Listening to conversations, however, requires a broader knowledge. David wasn't in a position to infer someone's meaning. Everywhere he went, he felt himself to be in danger. His situation required true understanding.
