how does lena and campbell really get close

As Campbell begins to spend time with Lena, her preconceived notions about Black people begin to fade and she gains a new understanding of a culture she used to be ignorant and afraid of. Instead of considering herself non-racist as she used to do by default, Campbell starts to examine her own internal landscape and question some of her deep beliefs: “I don’t want to admit this, but I do get nervous when a black guy gets in an elevator with me. Not because he’s black, though. Just when it’s a big guy and a small space. That’s all. But suddenly, I wonder. Suddenly, I’m not sure” (106). After looking inside and finding racist thoughts embedded in her subconscious, she begins to look outside and inspect the world. She discovers that racism is all around her, and she realizes she has a desire to fight against it in large part because of her growing friendship with Lena, who is by her side through all the wild events of the chaotic night.
