Viewing events from the perspective of Munra allows the reader to notice when an opportunity has been missed. Munra relates the story of when his stepson Luismi opened up to him for the first time in his young life. Munra is subsequently shocked and disgusted by the topics Luismi discusses with him and when Luismi begins to talk about his relationship with the Witch, his stepfather pretends to get a phone call. Rather than staying with Luismi to at least listen while he unburdens himself, he throws away the opportunity to listen to his young stepson, and thus to help him.
