What is the symbolism of the shadows that are said to chase visitors out of the Witch's house?

Many visitors to the Witch's house in the wake of her death have reported being chased by shadows that emerged from the walls. These shadows therefore symbolize guilt and the knowledge that the community's treatment of the Witch warrants punishment, or at least a reckoning.
