The Grandfather takes on the role of a guide when he comforts the dead in the novel's final passages. He tells them that the rain cannot hurt them now and that "the darkness doesn't last forever" (199). The Grandfather says, "See there? See that light shining in the distance? The little light that looks like a star? That's where you're headed...that's the way out of this hole" (199). Again, the theme of hope resonates within the ending of the novel, not because death can be avoided, but because perhaps death only masquerades as an ending.
