What type of relationship does Johnny Truant have with Lude?

Johnny and Lude spend a lot of their time together in bars. They partake in a lot of slimy deals, frequently betting on bar fights and getting into bar fights of their own together. It is upon Lude's urging that Johnny partakes in the last bar fight, which he loses in terribly.
