Describe symbolism in Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies by C.S. Forester

While in New Orleans, Hornblower sees steam tugs, which are fairly irrelevant to the story except insofar as they prevent his leaving New Orleans in a timely fashion; they do serve, however, as a sort of symbolic death knell to the age of sail.
