Why do the guests at the Gaiter family party laugh at Susan in the novel, Hogfather?

The guests at the Gaiter family party laugh because Susan plans to kill the monster that Twyla is afraid of. They are not able to see the eight-armed monster that Susan pulls out of the cellar and kills.
