What great adventurer proceeded and inspired John Smith's desire to sail to the New World?

John Smith's interest in the New World was inspired by Sir Walter Raleigh. After meeting with Raleigh in person, Smith not only invested in the Virginia Company's expedition.... he joined it as well.
