In the novel, Hiroshima, Mr. Tanimoto thinks that the damage has only happened in his area, but when he is able to see better he realizes that everything is gone and is on fire. He and many others thought that maybe a firebomb had been dropped or maybe a huge ball of gasoline that was ignited. They had no idea that a nuclear bomb had been dropped on them.
