The actual hills like white elephants are a much written about symbol. I'm going to discuss the beaded curtain. The beaded curtain in the restaurant represents the boundaries that the couple has to face. Issues of sex, fidelity, parenting, and children all have a division. The lady behind the curtain periodically disturbs the argument between the couple by serving them. This seems to intensify the conversation between Jig and the American.
