In Chapter Five, Regina walks around to look at Lindsay's canvass - Hatch takes his cue from the child and goes to look as well. The painting is a transparent rendering of Jimmy, looking upward while a beautiful black rose appears in the foreground. The symbolism is that Jimmy isn't willing to look at the perfect rose because his eye is on Heaven.
