Why is Maggie hiding under the porch with her three-year-old in the novel, Hide & Seek?

Maggie hides under the porch with her three-year-old because her cocaine fueled husband is on a drug-fueled rampage in their home. He is going from floor to floor and from room to room in an effort to find them. He calls out Maggie's name, first pleading and then demanding that they reveal themselves.
