One major theme and conflict within the book is Martin Luther's belief that the Pope was not infallible and that as a human being he was capable of error. To the Catholic Church this was an outrage, and although Luther was not trying to disrespect the Church, he would not agree that the Pope had the same authority as the Word of God.
