Fluellen had worn a leek in his cap in honor of St. David's day, an important Welsh holiday, but Pistol had brought him bread and salt and suggested that the items would go well with the leek. Fluellen decides to force Pistol to eat the leek instead because he was tired of Pistol's constant insults against his Welsh heritage.
