In Chapter 22, Virgil thinks that Chet Bullens, who he thinks of as "the Bull," is actually trying to kill him. Virgil thinks that Chet is the one who moved the cover over the well's opening, when it was actually Valencia, who is not aware that Virgil is trapped down there.
