In Section 16, Douglas and the Nawab represent the two conflicting races in India at this time. Their viewpoint surrounding the treatment of the Muslims, the deaths that occur, and the surrounding strife are markedly different. To this end they also represent a choice between two dramatically different worlds that Olivia seems to be making.
