The narrator's decision to stay in India is indicative of her approval of Olivia's choices to go against the societal norms. However, she is consciously making a different choice by keeping her child. While Olivia's letters have motivated her journey and continue to intrigue her, she stands at a different point emotionally than Olivia did, although she stands in the same physical location.
