Is Maji sympathetic to the narrator?

Maji is very sympathetic to the narrator. She offers to induce an abortion because she realizes that a child can radically change the direction of a woman's life. She has seen this many times before. Yet, when the narrator asks her to stop the abortion-inducing massage she does so immediately.
