Chid treats the people and things in his life as a means to an end. He takes food and shelter from the narrator without giving anything in return. He leaves dirty marks on her most valued possessions (Olivia's papers), and he leaves banana peels on the floor unless he is told to pick them up. He does not appear to have any regard for anyone or anything.
