Inder Lal and the narrator become closer at their visit to the Nawab's palace as a result of his willingness to help her on her search for information, and because she learns about him on this visit. Although he is reluctant to discuss the Nawab, who has a bad reputation, Inder Lal does give the narrator some background on the royal family and the palace. She learns that Inder Lal is under a lot of political pressure at his job, and only wants to be left alone to work. This insight into his personal feelings lays the ground work for a further relationship to develop.
