Inder Lal's mother is clearly the one in charge in her relationship with Ritu. This is evident in the way the older woman treats and speaks to her. It is also apparent that this is the normal state of affairs for most families due to the narrator's observations at the bazaar. The older women have more freedom and enjoyment than the younger and married daughters in law do.
