Maji is a person who knows many people and many things. She was once a midwife and knows how to perform an abortion. In fact, she offers this service to the narrator after learning about her pregnancy. Maji also is the one that explained what Ritu and her party should expect upon reading the end of their journey to the Himalayas. Plus, the Maji knows the history of the old beggar woman that the narrator tries to save. The old woman dies in Maji's arms. Maji is a person who cares for many other people, although she does not go out of her way to make this known.
