Olivia's letters and Chid's letters in Section 21 are both written to fulfill a need of the writer rather than to inform or give joy to the reader. Chid's letters aren't even written to the narrator, just written and ending in requests that she send him things. While Olivia's letters are a bit more personal, as they are addressed to Marcia, it seems they are more like journals she writes to express her own feelings and emotions.
