Why does Jonathan visit Rachel in New York City in the novel, Heartburn?

Jonathan visits Rachel in New York, so he can try and convince her to return to Mark. He says that if she returns, they can both wait out Thelma and Mark until the affair fizzles out. Rachel refuses.
