I think Marlow changes as the story progresses. Initially he saw native Africans as alien and strange. By the end of the novel he saw them as human beings who have had their souls sucked out of them by the colonial invasion. Marlow is less naive than his aunt. He sees the evils of imperialism and the European intent to exploit and plunder rather than bring "civilization" to the African continent.
