how does hattie survive the fist night

Her first night in Montana? Hattie builds a fire, heats supper and makes coffee. She then eats before pulling her bed down from the wall and makes it up with the only sheets she owns. Hattie then puts on almost every article of clothing she owns before finally feeling warm enough to sleep.
