How does Hatter respond to Dr. Summer when he attempts to speak with her the first time in the novel, Hatter Fox?

When Dr. Summer attempts to speak with Hatter for the first time, she does nothing but chant in a low voice. She will not look at him, and she will not speak with him. She is exercising the strength and what little rights she has, not to speak.
