Who is Duce from Hate List and what is their importance?

Duce, Nick's best friend, gives Valerie the cold shoulder when school starts because she never visited Nick's grave. Nick carries a lot of guilt over Nick's actions, feeling as if he could have helped.... and even as if he should have known.
