How did the bear’s behavior surprise Brian?

As Brian is eating and picking the berries, he becomes aware of a large black bear behind him. Brian remains still and the bear eventually leaves. Brian is surprised that the bear is pretty disinterested in him. Brian then fills the remnants of his jacket with berries and returns to his shelter. Still shocked by the sight of the bear, Brian sleeps that night with his hatchet near his head.
