How did Brian encounter the bear in Ch. 7 in Hatchet?

Brian encounters the bear, while exploring the woods and collecting raspberries. As Brian is eating and picking the berries, he becomes aware that a large black bear is behind him. Brian remains still and the bear eventually leaves.
