A harbor represents a place of safety even though the surroundings are threatening, dangerous, or uncertain. In nautical terms, a harbor is a sheltered place where ships dock and are kept safe from danger. In the novel, the author uses the metaphor of a harbor to suggest that people can be a harbor for other people who feel unsafe. Ms. Laverne introduces the idea of a a harbor when she teaches the children about the Lenape Indians who were chased off their land. She asks them if they would have provided a harbor for the Lenape if they had been alive during that time. She also encourages them to always be a harbor for each other.
