Significance of a puzzle?

A puzzle represents a family that is made of individual pieces that all fit together to make a whole picture. Esteban explains that without his father, his family is like his little sister's wooden puzzle that has a missing piece. The picture of the four little puppies is incomplete because part of the one dog is missing its neck, face and ears. Without their father, Esteban's family is similarly incomplete (46-47).
