How does Jimmy Clay explain Earley's disappearance in the novel, Handling Sin?

When Earley leaves the hospital, he buys a Cadillac from Jimmy and goes to see the young black woman with Earley close up. He is able to give Raleigh the information about his father's car purchase plus a better description of the young lady with Raleigh's father.
