When Agnes's father dies, Bartholomew inherits the family farm at Hewlands and leases a section of the property to Agnes so she can cultivate herbs for her business. He also intervenes when Joan attempts to banish Agnes from Hewlands and negotiates Agnes's marriage to the father to save her reputation. Bartholomew is loyal and protective brother, ensuring Agnes and her husband have a separate apartment in which to live, so she is not subject to John's abuse. Although Bartholomew merely tolerates the father, he still comes to Agnes's aid whenever she needs him. At the end of the novel, Bartholomew escorts Agnes to London so she can see her husband's play for herself.
