How does William Shakespeare use imagery in Hamlet?

The imagery is generally dark and melancholy. Shakespeare begins the play at midnight in the dead of winter. There is a ghost and much imagery to do with Heaven, Hell, and purgatory. As the play progresses, the imagery remains dark reflecting the themes and characters of the play.
