Felix says that the goal of his play was ultimately to free himself from his grief over Miranda’s death: the idea that she was still with him was an imaginative conceit that was very useful to him, but also a source of shame and guilt. Letting her go, like Ariel, to the winds, is a form of releasing himself from his mourning.
